That guy was not very bright. He wanted to waste a hand grenade (which he probably cannot replace) on a pair of people that are huddled against a rock and have no intention to immediately attack (and henceforth, are no immediate threat).

Not just that, he is standing within the blast radius.

I can see why he would be attracted to unlimited power and knowledge.
