Why in the world are they running Windows? And such an old version at that?
That cannot be newer than Windows 3.11, no wonder their system got pwned so easily.

Then again, Lane is running Windows XP, so it’s no wonder the E-Girls managed to get his contact list so easily.
Why do these guys have to be on such antiquated systems, with such subpar security?

Best install Linux or FreeBSD, and use sandboxed virtual machines to run the “grey” matters.

Also, the network needs to be segregated, OpenWrt or PfSense will be great for that.
This is just a start. If you truly need security, best to use decentralized networking, with a physical access key.

@guest Well, I’m no master of IT myself, but a part of it is most likely to be lack of knowledge on author part. Even hings like network segregation definitely aren’t common knowledge NOW, and the comic is much older. This also means that their OS might not be that old. Remember that Lane sells CD’s. It might be still early 2000s in universe.

On a side note, using older system makes sense for a hacker (at least on Windows). Unlike many Linux distributions that are one OS constantly updated like browsers, for example, Windows is replaced by newer version every now and then. New system filled with new vulnerabilities. Vulnerabilities that you may don’t know about. On the other hand, older system is completly analized and new weakpoints are unlikely to be found. Especially ones that you as a hacker wouldn’t know yourself. On top of that, since most users and companies usually ARE using relativety modern OS, this is where new hackers put most attention, so they may not even know about weakpoints of something old and obscure enough, and may consider it not worth the effort to learn about new OS just for you (unlikely, but buys some time against new guard, at least).
