#380 Not Exaggerating Much
When I first went to Japan, my experience was similar. It was warm and muggy while switching trains, and eventually I caved in and bought a drink. The first Japanese beverage I tried was “Pocari Sweat”, and it tasted like watered-down Gatorade.
And they wonder why Japanese drinks don’t sell so well in the west…
It could be tied to fruit being that expensive over there.
It’s kinda like the wierder british food: Afaik that started when they had to ration food during WW2 (and a few years after). So they had to start getting a bit more “innovate” with wath parts of animals could be eaten. Wich had a longterm effect of what tastes “good” for them.
The sweat from the elusive Pocari is considered a delicacy in some cultures.
They sell Pocari Sweat in Korea as well.
Little bit of marketing dissonance for English-speakers: it’s just a sport-type drink that’s supposed to replace what you’re sweating out, not imply that you’re drinking sweat.
It’s not actually too bad… once I nerved up enough to try it. They would likely change the name if it were not a thing of legend by now.
great page
Augh! nonononono… I’ve caught up from the archives. It’s one on the best, and yet most irritating feelings.
Also, the comic is great, and I love the art style.
This made me laugh out loud.
Am I the only guy here who thought of Picori while reading “Pocari”? That aside… my memory may be a bit foggy, but would this be the first energy drink for both of them?
Reminds me of that one Vocaloid song. It’s typically transliterated ‘PoPiPo,’ but some people write it like… well, pretty much like in this comic.
