What’s wrong with “RATATATATAT?” It may be a touch dated, but it is a classic sound FX. The only other sound I can think of would be “B-B-BRRRAAATTT” & I don’t know that that’s really any better.
Agreed. Rat-a-tat-tat implies a slow rate of fire, around 600 rpm or less, that is appropriate for a magazine fed rifle that you don’t want to reload only a few seconds after you squeeze the trigger.
I’m in the Ratta-tat-tat camp. There’s always Dakka-dakka-dakka, but that might be best for a heavier automatic weapon or machinegun. For me, B-b-brrrat is a higher rate of fire, like a submachinegun.
